It was a dark and stormy night. . . .

Happy Friday, everyone!  For today’s Friday Fun, I am going to set the scene for you, and then you will write the opening paragraph of a story (no more than 3 sentences).  Here’s your setting:

A tailor is walking home from work one night in the rain through narrow, twisting cobblestone streets.  Just then, the moon sneaks out of the clouds to shine a light on a small, wet lump of something at the base of a street lamp.  The tailor’s pace quickens.  He reaches the lump and puts his hand out to it. . . . .

  1. Just as his hand touches it, it seems to flinch but then quickly moves back to press against his hand.
Feeling encouraged, the tailor kneels to take a closer look. He starts to uncover the poor lump, but as he does so, he suddenly steps back in confused horror. Why would anyone dump a load of Jello on the sidewalk and cover it?

      • You know, I was simply going to make the changes for you and not show your comment. But then I thought that this was a great opportunity to show the revising process! I absolutely agree that just “Jello?” would make a better last sentence. Much more impact that way. I love that you thought about your entry and took your time to review, revise, and re-post. This is what learning is all about!

  2. “Madonna Mia!!” the tailor exclaims as he lifts up the soggy lump.
Just then the lump opens it’s tiny eyes and shivers with delight.
The glistening lump was the tailor’s long lost pet chinchilla, Valentina.

  3. Before his hand can reach the wet black lump, a small tendril streaks out from it and adheres itself to his fingers! The tailor stumbles backwards, and uses his other hand to remove the tendril, even as more reach out and anchor onto him. As the mass of the lump pulls itself to him and images start to flash through his mind, the tailor realizes that he had the misfortune to become the latest host for the supervillain, Venom.

Just then, the moon sneaks out of the clouds to shine a light on a small, wet lump of something at the base of a street lamp. The tailor’s pace quickens. He reaches the lump and puts his hand out to it, thinking it might be a dog or a small child. The surface feels slick and gives a little under the pressure of his touch. Suddenly a rhythmic, ticking sound begins to emanate from the thing at his feet. Then it rises into the chill air, circles the tailor’s head and shoots off into the dark alleyway.
